Turbulence

Back before Christmas I woke early one morning with intention of getting Christmas light images at the Silver Bridge falls here in Bracebridge. I found a few interesting shots but nothing special. I walked around the base of the falls and noticed a light in a side pool. Upon closer inspection I found foam in a haphazard motion caused by the eddies in the moving water. With a slower shutter speed the moving foam appears as if its  clouds above a  sunset ocean. Such a large scene in such a small pool at the base of the falls, over looked by many...but not me!

Seasonal Monochromes

" Winter is getting to me...Black and white is what I see...if only the sun would shine on thee."

A poet I'm not but it is true of winter in Canada, it is a real monochrome jungle. These Images move forward to spring and summer when colour will return. For now we must be satisfied with the knowledge that its coming?.....Soon!

Faux Vintage pt 2

I was looking for an image, for the theme of "Boats" in one of the photography groups I belong to and the shot I was using was a perfect candidate for my Faux Vintage series. ( Click Faux Vintage under Labels on side bar for details...can you see the colour?) So here it is with another I had completed a while ago!

From an artistic viewpoint; Colour depicts reality. Black and white is an interpretation of reality.
~ Andrew Gibson

Simple...Black & White

At one time all photography was in monochrome, until the invention of Kodachrome ( remember the Paul Simon tune?) Today many photographers are rediscovering the simplistic beauty of black and white and are giving viewers a sense of nostalgia.
Ask someone to describe their feelings of a monochrome image and you will hear "classic, artistic, natural and haunting" ask another and you will hear something completely different!
Black and white just gives a real appreciation for details. Its simple, by taking away colour you see the image without distraction.

Three Costume Changes

My thermometer read -24 Celsius this morning! Thats a wee bit chilly. As the sun came up to show a bright blue sky, I was gazing over the large maple stand in my back yard and thought of the many times I have taken pictures of that very scene. Well here are three of my favorites!

P.s  Don't forget to feed the fish while your here, also please don't be afraid to comment or at least check off one of the boxes below. Thanks for looking.  Ted

Whiskey Jack Camp

The thoughts of spring that I had earlier also brought to mind our family cabin. Whiskey Jack Camp is a log cabin my father built in the 70's. A log cabin on Belle Island on Lake Mistinikon in north eastern Ontario.
all the amenities, running water (Grab a bucket and head for the lake) wood cooking, wood heating and  kerosene lamps...the true sense of romance, it is a real haven. Ive never heard a phone ring there!
Every spring we enjoy the atmosphere of the quiet and beautiful surroundings for some friendly fishing competition. All that can be heard are "I caught the biggest!" or " That one doesn't count! its to small!"
That time is fast approaching...I cant wait!

below are a few scenes you may see when enjoying a true northern Ontario experience.

Learn what you shoot, then shoot what you have learned. ~ JE Ted Gardner
A photograph is usually looked at - seldom looked into. ~ Ansel Adams

I really understand this quote. I participate in many online photography clubs and forums with some really excellent images on display, but they are missing one thing. A picture of a bird is great , sharp colourful with great composition and lighting....that's fine but the photographer titles it "Yellow Bird". Its is of my opinion that to take really great images you need to know what and or who you are taking a picture of. Landscapes, flowers and any image imaginable require some understanding of their existences or reason. If you capture an image of something unknown, don't you want to know?...I do!

p.s The "Yellow Bird" was a Yellow Warbler...how hard was that ?

Re visiting Arizona

With bitter cold days and snow coming down my mind has drifted back to Arizona. It will be two years soon. We were in south east Arizona, south of Tucson and north of Tombstone, in the general area of Green Valley and the Madera Canyon. Hot dry days and desert cool evenings, a birding Mecca!
These are a few of my better images...stay tuned more to come in the future.

Black with a Smack of Colour pt. 2

I was asked to donate some prints to an upcoming function here in Bracebridge, a Ladies Bonspeil (Curling tournament for the non curling viewers out there). My mind quickly decided a few from my Black with a Smack series would do, but I wanted something new! So out comes my flower and garden catalogue of images and after an hour or so I have five likely candidates....3 more hours pass and  these are my results.
